I am on the hunt for a crank neck chisel. 3/4" or larger. I want the short kind. I have found some Henry Taylors that are the short style but no one seems to have them. There are the Japanese ones around but they are around $100. The HT were half of that. I am not willing to drop a C note on 1 chisel. Any one know where I could get the HTs or maybe another brand. Filippo, Thanks for the offer. I may take you up on that. I know some of the old Buck Bros. are pretty good. It is hard to find the short style but then again a old chisel may be short from usage. Pat thanks, those look like nice tools and reasonable too but I need more of the trowel style handle arrangment . Brook have you ordered from these guys and if so how was shipping ? Thanks, L. |

However the dog leg chisels on the link you poseted are short bladed crank chisels. 5mm (7/32") cutting tip width 3 3/4" blade length 8" overall length |

Thanks everyone. Todd, 1. I have thought of cutting down a long version. Something that would be easier if it was a fairly inexpensive tool and or used and slightly abused tool. 2. I called Traditional Woodworker and wouldn't you know it, they are closed from today to the 16th. I decided that I really need one of these but in reality I can wait. 3. As you noted too pricey, especially to whack off a few inches ! So, yah, if you guys see something that would be cool. Link P.S. I thought about making one but at shop rate I could buy a whole set of Japanese ones, and another set of any other ones. Sometimes I do learn. A lot of other times I don't know what I have less of, time or brains. |

Thanks, Link Link, there is a fellow seeling some Buck Bros at SMC (prices seem high, but no nibbles either): 3 Buck Bros crank neck chisels. All in outstanding condition. 1. someone ground this shallow gouge into a 3/16 chisel. It was well done. $15 2. 3/8 Bevel edge crank chisel. VGC $35 3. 3/4" Bevel edge crank neck chisel. VGC $40 4+5 matched pair 7/8" incannel gouges one cranked and one straight, both same medium sweep. $40 Mike |

I've made some bent tools (for working inside guitars etc) from old files, I'm sure you could make a nice chisel from one, too. Its not that much work. |

Link, I've been using the Hirsh chisels from Lee Valley for 6 years now and really like them. Better than I expected for the price. |

It has been quite a few years since I bought anything from the UK store, and I can't even remember which tool I bought there. At one time, it seemed reasonable to pay the shipping, not sure now with the current low dollar. Send them an e-mail and see what they say.
